Marianne Collar—or as campers know her best, Mrs. Collar, Camp Collar, or simply MC—is the Director of Camps and Recreation at Conner Prairie. In her role, she’s responsible for sparking curiosity in children and grown-ups alike through camp and outdoor experiences that “unschool” learning and bring transferable character skills to life. At heart, Marianne doesn’t just run programs—she cultivates spaces where curiosity, creativity, and connection thrive. For Marianne, this work is more than a job—it’s her heartwork. Nothing brings her more joy than being in nature, sharing the love of learning, and helping others rediscover that childlike sense of wonder and peace. With a background in education and a lifelong habit of listening, reading, and consuming all things joy, she brings a unique perspective to the camp world: one grounded in both experience and delight.

Marianne’s greatest accomplishments aren’t measured in awards or titles but in the love, positivity, and belonging she fosters wherever she goes. She believes that every moment—whether under the sun, stars, or moon—can spark growth and discovery. 

Outside of camp life, Marianne finds joy in the simple and the whimsical: family time, tending to her garden, caring for chickens, cats, and dogs, and getting lost in a good book. She’s also a Disney dreamer, always wondering and imagining the impossible. Whether at camp or in her backyard, Marianne is in the business of joy—building experiences that remind us all that the journey matters more than the product.

The Conner Prairie Foundation board of directors oversees the management of the museum's endowment and the land and structures of the museum, including the William Conner House.
